Nordkalk is investing in northern regions by developing operations in Veitsiluoto, Kemi, northern Finland. The goal is to ensure the reliable delivery of essential lime products to customers and support the region’s industry with sustainable solutions.
Nordkalk began processing and distributing lime products in Veitsiluoto, Kemi, at the start of the year. The environmental permit granted by the Regional State Administrative Agency of Northern Finland enables the import, storage, processing, and delivery of lime to customers. The first products have already been dispatched to customers.
At Nordkalk, customer needs drive operations, and the new operations center is an important step in enhancing regional delivery reliability. The operations center in Veitsiluoto particularly supports the mining industry’s needs in Lapland, Kainuu, and northern Sweden.
“We want to ensure the availability of essential raw materials for our customers. Northern Finland and Sweden are strategically important areas for us, and we aim to serve customers in the region even better,” emphasizes Nordkalk’s EVP Mikael Furu.
For northern mines, lime is a vital raw material, and Nordkalk’s operations ensure the uninterrupted availability of this key resource.
Plans are also underway to establish a slaking plant in Kemi, which would enable the local production of slaked lime. This further strengthens Nordkalk’s commitment to effectively meeting regional customer needs. Transportation is handled seamlessly by sea and road, ensuring speed and flexibility in the supply chain.
Nordkalk is committed to environmentally friendly practices in all its operations. In Kemi, existing structures such as silos and warehouses are utilized, reducing the need for new infrastructure and supporting sustainable development.
Operations in Kemi do not cause emissions to soil, groundwater, or the environment. Dust generated during lime unloading, transfer, and storage is minimized through various measures, and noise levels are kept low thanks to indoor processing. The production process does not generate wastewater.
Nordkalk’s presence in Veitsiluoto, Kemi, also brings new jobs and growth opportunities. Currently, Nordkalk has hired three employees to manage operations in Veitsiluoto, Kemi, and the company anticipates increasing its workforce if needed in the future. The company’s strong regional commitment supports northern economic development and industrial competitiveness.
“Our operations in Kemi clearly demonstrate that we want to be part of the development in the north. Our customers’ needs guide our actions, and our goal is to be their most reliable partner for lime products,” Furu concludes.
