This summer, Nordkalk’s Pargas site is welcoming some new buzzing residents. Two beehives have been placed at the quarry as part of a cooperation with local beekeeper Titti Edfelt, who cares for around 1.5 million bees across the region.
Titti began beekeeping in 2014 after hearing that a large apple orchard was being built nearby. “It felt like the right time to jump in,” she says. Since then, her life has been full of buzzing wings, floral scents, and honey straight from the hive. “The variety, the closeness to nature, that’s what I love. And yes, you can tell a lot about bees from the way they fly before a storm!”
So why is Nordkalk bringing bees to a quarry?
Pollinators like bees are essential to biodiversity, but their numbers are declining globally. At Nordkalk, we want to act responsibly and support nature where we operate. This project is a small but concrete way to bring more life into our environment and show our commitment to positive local impact.
