Nordkalk Corporation will discontinue production at its plant in Louhi (Savonlinna), Finland in the end of June due to the long continued difficult market situation.
Nordkalk started the codetermination negotiations in Louhi on 12 November 2018 to find solutions to the market situation. It was recognised in the closing meeting today on 8 January 2019, that no means had been found to reach necessary profitability and therefore the production will be discontinued on 30 June 2019.
There are 21 employees in Louhi, and the discontinuation of the production means that work will end for the entire personnel. During the negotiations, efforts have been made to find employment for the personnel in other Nordkalk units.
Nordkalk’s Louhi unit produces quicklime and slaked lime for industries and limestone powders for agriculture. After June, deliveries to customers will come from other Nordkalk units.
Mining in Louhi started already in the 1930’s. Industrial production started in 1943 when production was moved here from Ruskeala, which belonged to the Soviet Union. Nordkalk’s previous owner Partek bought the company Ruskealan Marmori Oy in 1989.
