Cause of the silo accident at NorFraKalk on Sunday was failure of struts supporting a cone inside the silo. It gave way, causing lime to fall down. This created a vacuum in the upper part of the silo and it crushed up. A support collar around the silo prevented further crushing.
The damaged silo is stable and there is no longer danger of further collapse. The silo has been sealed off and covered in order to keep water away. The other two silos next to the damaged one will be strengthened before they will be used again. This work will start in the end of the week.
It is currently estimated that lime supply to customers can be ensured with some special arrangements until the silos are in use again and the lime kiln running.
NorFraKalk is a joint venture owned in half by Nordkalk Corporation and Norwegian Franzefoss Minerals AS. It produces quicklime, calcium oxide, mostly for the needs of paper industry.
