More Safety Observations, Less Accidents – Positive Development in Nordkalk’s Occupational Health and Safety

Nordkalk (info a, 30 October 2012

Nordkalk’s annual Group level Occupational Health & Safety Days took place on 22-23 October 2012. The purpose of the event is to share information and thus develop the company’s work for safety. Nordkalk’s long-term goal is zero accidents.

One can see the fruits of the work done for occupational safety at Nordkalk. The personnel have been encouraged to make safety observations i.e. report any faults or mistakes in their working environment. Lately the number of reported safety observations has increased: last year the number of reported safety observations was 1200 i.e. about one per employee. This year we have already reached the same level, and the number is still expected to go up by the end of the year. At the same time, the number of accidents has decreased. In 2011, there were 49 accidents. So far this year 30 accidents have occurred, none of which were serious. The numbers include Nordkalk’s own employees as well as those of the contractors (LTA 0 = includes accidents that caused no absence from work).
Nordkalk’s situation regarding occupational accidents is already good in comparison with other companies. The focus has lately been on changing the attitudes towards safety, and the trend has been positive. Nordkalk’s plant in Vimpeli Finland can be pointed out as an excellent example of this; its personnel celebrated ten years without accidents in June. We have had some good results also from the campaign against eye injuries “See you safely”. The campaign will be widened to cover also the employees of outside transport companies. Last year 16 eye injuries occurred, but along with the campaign, there have only been two this year.
