The best properties of versatile limestone-based products are their ability to neutralise and clean when they react with various substances. Due to chemical reactivity, limestone-based products are most often consumed during our clients' processes, or they are transformed into new chemical compounds. Because of this, it is typically not possible to recycle lime as-is as a raw material for our production processes.
Instead, limestone-based by-products generated in the client's processes can be utilised in many applications. Among other things, the lime-based by-product of pulp production can be utilised in water neutralisation or land improvement.
Circular economy products for the construction industry since the 1990s
The construction industry is one of Nordkalk's clientele segments which is actively seeking circular economy solutions in order to save virgin raw materials and to reduce their carbon footprint.
Solutions developed from side streams have long been in used in soil stabilisation, for example, but there is still a lot to be done. We are constantly looking for new material streams for the use of our clients, and, among other things, we are launching new products in which burnt lime has been replaced by, for example, lime kiln dust. Additionally, we participate in regional research projects investigating the utilisation of lime-based by-products in the stabilization of dredged material or in concrete-replacing geopolymers. In the Turku region, we act as a flagship company in the 3C cluster promoting the circular economy in construction.
Our expertise is at our customers’ service
Other examples of circular economy solutions offered by Nordkalk can be found, for example, in the neutralisation of process, mining and waste waters, which utilises both our own and our clients' lime-based by-products.
In addition, field and environmental liming utilises circular economy products – while also taking into account the quality and limit values set by the end use. They have been developed by utilising lime kiln dust and tailings, among other things.
Our strong lime expertise is incredibly useful in developing new circular economy solutions. We have in-depth knowledge of the chemistry of lime and its various uses, and we are able to analyse the potential of various by-products in multiple ways – and discover new uses for them.
We know lime, and our expertise is at your service. Let's explore the possibilities of recycling the lime used in your processes together!
