Nordkalk’s sustainability report 2020 has been published

Hanne Mäkelä (hanne.makela a, 2 March 2021

Nordkalk has published its Sustainability Report for 2020. The report has been prepared in accordance with the GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) Sustainability Reporting Standards and assured by an independent third party.

The report is based on Nordkalk’s renewed Sustainability Programme, which was updated in 2020 according to the results of the comprehensive stakeholder survey. The implementation and further definitions of the new programme will continue in the year 2021.

Renewed Sustainability Programme is organised into nine focus areas consisting of 18 material aspects and focusing on the impacts of our operations from environmental, social and economic perspectives. Each area contains dedicated management commitments, long-term targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which are also linked to our certified Management System.

Sustainability is at the very core of Nordkalk’s strategy

Our vision is to become the leading limestone player focused on sustainable solutions. In practice, this means that we actively develop new products and solutions to support our customers in their sustainability efforts and help them reduce their environmental impact.

We increase our engagement in circular solutions and strive for total utilisation of all extracted material with a 100% material efficiency target. At the same time, we focus on reducing the harmful impacts of our operations, i.e. emissions caused by processing limestone to quicklime and the extraction of minerals from the ground.

Since our future success lies in the continuing commitment of our people, we want to take good care of our personnel and make sure they can do their work safely every day. Safety is our first priority and our ultimate target is zero accidents.

To ensure the profitable growth of our business, we constantly develop our limestone reserves for the future and continue with the operational excellence based on continuous improvements.

Exceptional but successful year

During 2020, we set long-term targets for our climate work and started to work on the roadmap towards fossil-free operations. We aim for carbon-neutrality by 2045. In our limestone operations and internal transports, the target year is 2035.

We continued our energy efficiency actions and managed to exceed our annual target. Our material efficiency was also on a good level and we took big steps towards the circular economy. We also started to define our solutions’ environmental handprint, which refers to the positive environmental impact of our limestone-based solutions.

Our COVID-19 mitigation activities were successful and we managed to secure continued operations also during these very extraordinary times. In occupational safety we didn’t reach our targets, but with the support of the SafeNordkalk campaign conducted in the autumn, we managed to raise safety activity to a whole new level.

Thanks to the successful performance improvement programme, our profitability improved significantly compared to last year.
