Nordkalk’s strong limestone knowledge and long tradition of R&D comes useful when developing new circular solutions.
“We have been working with circular solutions for quite a while already, but now our aim is to accelerate this business and find new circular material streams and develop new high value-added circular solutions to meet our customers’ needs”, says Annica Lindfors, director, Circular Solutions at Nordkalk.
Nowadays, for example a by-product of lime production, so called lime kiln dust (LKD), and different side streams from the pulp and paper and metal and mining industries are mostly used in agriculture, industrial water treatment and soil stabilisation.
Less stone extracted, less waste generated, less emissions
Circular economy offers interesting opportunities for replacing the use of virgin limestone with circular raw materials. Due to its chemical qualities it is not possible to circulate limestone back as such as an original raw material, but the calcium-based side streams or by-products of different industrial processes are in many cases useful as new circulated raw material sources. By taking these side streams into use, Nordkalk can support its customers in their transition towards circular economy.
“By utilising secondary raw materials we can together reduce the use of natural resources and support the realisation of environmental and climate goals. And also generate profitable business for everyone in the value chain”, says Annica Lindfors.
In the coming years, Nordkalk will focus its R&D activities on developing new calcium-based circular solutions.
