Helping out by donating time and money

Tiina Roine (info a, 29 May 2020

The corona pandemic is having a huge impact on the lives of millions of people and companies around the world. While many businesses are struggling due to the pandemic, Nordkalk and its people have been among the lucky ones by not having been impacted as hard. Therefore we want to give back to our communities. We have helped out a bit in Poland and Sweden in a way that has best suited our communities.

The scale of the coronavirus pandemic surprised nearly everyone in the local community in the Świętokrzyskie region in Poland, where Nordkalk has operations. A noticeable effect of this surprise were problems with access to personal protective equipment (PEE) for medical personnel throughout the whole of Poland.

“Being part of the local community, we want to join in helping those who are trying to bring help – often risking their health and even life – to the residents of the Świętokrzyskie region," says Piotr Maciak, CEO of Nordkalk Polska Sp. z o. o. Nordkalk has given a donation to the local hospital and local authority primary care facilities. Nordkalk operates also in the Sławno District, where it has supported a local hospital with a donation as well.

Different kind of “after work” in Sweden

Pernilla Wangenborn from Nordkalk Sweden had learned that health care in her region needs about 2000-2500 protective gowns per day depending on the number of patients. So, when she saw on LinkedIn that a local hospital in her homeland Sweden had started to make their own protective gowns, she got an idea.

The hospital was asking for volunteers to come and participate in a different kind of an after work event making disposable protective gowns. Pernilla told about the hospital’s “project After Work”  in a team meeting at work. Her team found the idea very good, but realized that it would be impossible for them to participate as a team because of the pandemic restrictions.

Pernilla’s next idea was to involve the parents of her son’s handball team. And so, on 25 May, about 20 parents gathered together for three hours to make 1140 protective gowns for the hospital. It was about 300 more than they had thought possible.

“We were all so motivated to work in a goal orientated fashion wanting and getting over 1000 pcs made,” shares Pernilla about the evening.

The parents found it very meaningful to be able to help in this serious situation the whole world is in and Nordkalk’s support for their sons’ team felt really nice.
