The Alinenjärvi lake will get the lime it is longing for in the autumn

Tiina Roine (info a nordkalk.com), 5 February 2020

One can revive waterways by liming them. The next liming for the Alinenjärvi chain of lakes in Nokia, Finland, will take place in autumn 2020, six years after the previous liming.

The representatives of the town of Nokia, the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Pirkanmaa, the Water Protection Association of the River Kokemäenjoki and Nordkalk met in January 2020 to discuss the state of the lake and the practicalities of the forthcoming liming. The meeting started with a study of the water analyses, which indicated that the water course is in a need of liming.

Nordkalk’s previous owner, Partek, made a commitment in 1998, as part of the company’s 100 anniversary celebrations, to take care of the quality of the Alinenjärvi water course for a 100 years. Liming has taken place after 1998 in 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2014, and the acidity levels of the lake have been monitored annually.
With liming, the water quality of a water system can be restored to a level prior to the acidification. When a water system becomes acid, the pH level of the water drops, the concentration of harmful metals increase, many species of plants and animals disappear and valuable fish population tumble.

The liming of the lake in 2014 was recorded:
