Project Manager Matti Permi and COO Kari Vyhtinen happy about a project accomplished.
The new crushing plant increases the annual production capacity to 2.5 million tonnes of limestone, offered in several fractions. In addition to capacity increase, the plant improves health and safety conditions and decreases environmental impact of production. The office building and social premises for the personnel were also renewed.
The high-quality limestone of Eskibalikli is used mostly in construction; it is, however, suitable for several customer segments and also for use as raw material for quicklime. In the laboratory tests, the active CaO level of quicklime made of Eskibalikli stone has been 97-98 per cent, and tests on industrial scale are on-going with promising results. This makes the quicklime optimal for steel industry for maximising steel melt shop productivity, for example.
Eskibalikli is located in the Canakkele-Biga region, about 300 kilometers southwest of Istanbul. The vicinity of the seashore means a logistical advantage, which makes it possible to serve customers also outside of Turkey in the Mediterranean and Black Sea areas.
“Turkey is a growing market with strong population growth. At the moment the country is experiencing a downturn in the economy, but there are major industrial and infrastructure projects on-going and planned in the Canakkele-Biga region. We expect that after some time the demand for limestone-based products will be significant, to which our modern crushing plant is equipped to quickly adjust”, says Hannu Hautala, CEO of Nordkalk.
The reserves of the high-quality limestone in Eskibalikli are expected to last for at least 30 years.
