Energy will be stored with the help of lime - Nordkalk and SaltX started cooperation

Susan Heiskala (info a nordkalk.com), 19 November 2018

The energy storage company SaltX Technology and Nordkalk Corporation have signed a Letter of Intent to manufacture Nano Coated Salt (NCS).  SaltX is starting the full-scale production of patented Nano Coated Salt (NCS) used in energy storage.

"Energy storage is an interesting market and SaltX is an interesting company. We are ready to support SaltX and ramp up the production to meet the growing demand for this material", says Tomas Eriksson, Chief Commercial Officer at Nordkalk. Especially energy storage from renewable resources is challenging and new technologies are desperately needed. New NCS-technology is one of the solutions.

Nano-coated technology by SaltX has been developed to store energy thermo-chemically. The main ingredient of the "salt" is actually more precisely calcium oxide, which has a good volumetric energy density. The technology enables a long-term and a cost-effective solution.

Nordkalk will be a preferred manufacturer of patented NCS in Europe. NCS consists mainly of CaO (calcium oxide) coated with silica-based coating material. The capacity of full-scale production will be 10,000 tons of NCS, which is equivalent to 4,000 MWh of thermal energy storage.

"With the partnership with Nordkalk and silica producer WACKER, SaltX gets the best of two worlds: Both companies have the required technical know-how, production capabilities and financial resources to manufacture and supply the NCS at the right quality and in the quantities we need to meet the projected global demand of our NCS in the coming years", says Karl Bohman, CEO of SaltX Technology.

Nordkalk has started pilot production in Pargas Finland and already produced several tons of the SaltX NCS based on SaltX recipe and specifications. Currently, Nordkalk is producing for Vattenfall's project in Berlin to be delivered within the next month.
