Lime for Pulp & Paper

The papermaking industry uses limestone in a refined form for coating purposes and as filler. Two types of paper pigments are produced from calcium carbonate: GCC (ground calcium carbonate) and PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate), which is made from quicklime.

Nordkalk manufactures lime for processing into PCC in Verdal, Norway and in Lohja, Finland. The Verdal limestone is used as the raw material. Our new lime kiln in Verdal has the latest technology on the market. It is especially designed for the production of PCC lime and has a capacity of 200,000 tons per year.

Calcite for GCC is produced by Nordkalk in Suomen Karbonaatti Oy, where the other owner is Omya Oy. Suomen Karbonaatti's production plant is situated in the middle of the world's largest papermaking area in Lappeenranta.

Paper is made from pulp, cellulose, which can be obtained from the sulphate processes by cooking wood chips in a strong lye solution. Chemicals from the cooking process circulate in the recovery line of the pulp mill where the composition can be chemically adjusted by the addition of quicklime to the causticising process. Nordkalk manufactures lime for pulp industry at its plant in Köping, Sweden, in Lohja, Finland and in Hylla, Norway.
