Sea transport

Nordkalk is a significant actor in the marine transport industry in Northern Europe and our annual requirement of an effective shipping tonnage capacity is extensive. Nordkalk operates mainly on the Baltic Sea where limestone products are carried between many ports of the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. Some of the transports also begin their journey e.g. in France and Norway and end up in ports of the Baltic Sea. Most of Nordkalk's total annual volume of ca 3 mln tons is shipped from Nordkalk's plant in Storugns in Gotland. The harbour has become a hub for navigation on the Baltic Sea.

Here about 450 ships load 2 mln tons of limestone and also quicklime each year and transport it to different countries, mainly customers in the steel- and paper industry.

From port facilities in the Baltics limestone is carried to e.g. Germany where it is used in the sugar and food industry. From Norway large quantities of quicklime are transported to be used in the paper and construction industry.

Nordkalk has ships of different sizes in use. The smaller ones carry ca 1,750 tons and the largest up to 18,000 tons. The loading and unloading capacity ranges from some hundred tons to a thousand tons per hour. Several Nordkalk sea transports utilize specially designed self-unloading ships with entirely closed loading systems and closed cargo holds. This protects the product from moist and weather during transport and minimizes dust and other environmental effects in the ports.

Adequate ships in Nordklalk's operations are mainly acquired through annually-based contracts with different shipping companies which operate within our transport area in Northern Europe. Nordkalk has a shipping department, which employs three persons. Good co-operation with brokerages enables us to utilize current market information in the best way and offer Nordkalk's various operations good logistical solutions.
